Working alongside interior designer Gail Marsden Interiors, Lumen Loom was engaged to develop and deliver the complete lighting scheme for a significant refurbishment and rear extension to a private residence in Bolton. The brief centred on the new open-plan kitchen and living area — a spacious, light-filled volume with a distinctive apex ceiling that became the defining element of the lighting design.
Deltalight's Splitline magnetic track system was chosen as the primary architectural element, running the full length of the apex to provide a clean, purposeful line of light that follows the geometry of the room without interruption. The magnetic format gave maximum flexibility — Spy adjustable track spots were used to direct focused accent light precisely where needed, while Dot.com recessed luminaires on the track provided a more diffuse, ambient contribution within the same continuous run. Both sit flush within the Splitline profile, keeping the ceiling plane completely uncluttered. Away from the track, the main ceiling planes were served by Spy semi-recessed downlights and Spy Micro mini recessed downlights — fixed-position fittings that deliver consistent general illumination across the kitchen and living zones, with aperture sizes chosen to suit the ceiling height and the scale of each area.
The softer layers of the scheme were achieved through bespoke LED linear profiles and tape installed throughout the cabinetry. Continuous runs of LED tape sit within custom aluminium extrusion profiles above the upper cabinet runs, casting a warm indirect glow that bounces off the ceiling and softens the overall ambient light level in the kitchen. The same approach was used inside open shelving niches and display recesses throughout the living area — a detail that transforms storage into something closer to sculpture, and ensures that no surface in the room is left in hard shadow. The result is a space that reads beautifully both as a working kitchen and as a home to spend an evening in.
